MODEL HISTORY

If you like driving but life has inconveniently filled up with children, dogs and outdoor kit, this is the sort of car you quietly Google at midnight. The Passat Alltrack is Volkswagen’s answer to the question: “What if we took the sensible Passat wagon, gave it some ground clearance and a proper turbo motor, but didn’t ruin it with a jelly-suspension SUV body?”

Under the modest Silver paint is a very German bit of engineering. A 2.0-litre turbo four drives all four wheels through a DSG dual-clutch gearbox and VW’s 4Motion system. It’s not a GTI in disguise, but 210-ish horsepower and a healthy slug of torque means this thing hustles – particularly on a wet, twisty road where the Haldex rear axle quietly does its thing. Compared with the average crossover it feels lower-slung, more tied down and more engaging : MacPherson struts up front, multi-link rear, decent damping and that familiar VW steering which, while not dripping with feel, places the nose exactly where you want it.

This particular Alltrack is in the rather discrete VW silver metallic with dark brown leather. It’s loaded with the good contemporary toys – Front Assist, cornering (“bend”) lights, driver-alert system, dual-zone climate, heated electric seats – but the overall vibe is still restrained, more “continental express” than lifestyle cliché. It’ll calmly tow, haul bikes, ski gear and dogs, then sit at a cruise all day feeling solid and unflustered.

So no, it isn’t an icon like an E30 M3. But as a grown-up enthusiast’s daily – something that can cover distance quickly and confidently, still make you faintly pleased when you arrive, and swallow real-world life without complaint – this Alltrack quietly makes a lot of sense.

EQUIPMENT

This is a fully spec'd example since new, with a few extras added too. Equipment includes: Full & supple brown leather interior, heated front seats, climate control with ice cold for summer, heated front seats with (memory) electric driver adjustment, heated side-mirrors, high-fidelity Bluetooth sound system with Japanese spec. sat nav, reversing camera, parking sensors, drive recorder, analogue clock in the centre of the dash, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, Volkswagen original option deep-pile fitted floor mats, privacy side-glass etc.

EXTERIOR

The Passat AllTrack is a rugged 4WD design cross between a sports-estate-car & an off-road SUV. Able to cruise comfortably at high speeds, or traverse muddy fields or even have a go at green-laning, the plastic arch trims and ample ground-clearance encourage taking the road less travelled just for fun. Roof rails allow use of say bicycle racks in the summer, or snow-board racks in winter, this makes it an excellent companion all year round

INTERIOR

The leather interior's condition is typical of an upmarket car from Japan. We can confirm (see interior pictures & ashtray) it's never been smoked in, or even used in rough off-road or snow conditions either!

There are no squeaks, rattles, nor any broken electrical items or trim, exceptionally low levels of wear for its age and especially when compared to models from other markets i.e the UK

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The EA888 turbo-charged 4-cylinder engine is a well-proven powerhouse mostly used in various GTi Golf models from the mk. 5 through to the 7.5 & even the Golf R! The transmission consists of a Haldex 4WD system with 6-speed dual clutch (DSG) transmission, as used in the mk. 6 Golf R. Being a heavier & larger Passat, VW didn't skimp on braking performance. The drive-by-wire throttle control works in combination with traction control & sports mode. Gear shifting can be done manually via steering wheel-mounted paddles, just like on a GTi Golf, but the transmission works so intuitively, its easiest to just put the shift lever into drive or sport, and get on with the journey when you're not in the mood for additional entertainment!

WHEELS, BRAKES & SUSPENSION

This Passat TSi rides remarkably well, and we couldn't help notice whilst driving it - that the longer (than Golf GTi / Golf R) travel FourTrack suspension is perfect for soaking up whatever bumps and imperfections there are directly ahead. This makes it easy to make surprisingly fast progress, even over speed bumps, for example. With four new matching tyres, its ready to eat up the miles.

CONDITION REPORT

Condition throughout, is essentially as the pictures show - this being a car we selected as an outstanding example we'd want to own ourselves, were we looking for such a spec. for personal long-term use. There are some minor chips and very light swirls here and there Tiny stone chips on the bonnet too. Nothing to warrant need for attention though. Interior is similarly largely unmarked - as already mentioned above. You'd be hard pressed to find a better example anywhere for this price.

TEST DRIVE

This is essentially a 4WD Golf GTi in sensible and practical Q-car guise! Too bad they never sold in the U.K. (where there were only turbo-diesel FourTrack Passat B7's). No faults at all to report - not even any oil mist on the engine, nor squeak from the interior. Nothing to worry about.
