The Subaru Technica International Type R is THE most interesting and sought after of the classic shape Imprezas. The classic coupe is the connoisseur`s Impreza - finely honed for maximum performance and capability, this is the most impressive of the breed. STi Version 3 Type denotes this is a lightweight competition spec. 2 door model. This model was only made for the Japanese market, with P1 model sold in UK during the same period. Special high performance features abound and this particular example's had some excellent tuning additions. This is one of the finest tuned examples of the breed we've come across in years. Condition is also outstanding.Performance Upgrades This Type R Impreza's been finely tuned for high performance on the street or track as a combined package encompassing power, handling and braking:One of the most important high performance modifications for a Subaru flat 4 is to fit an equal length exhaust manifold, as this prevents cyl. no 4 running lean and failing at higher boost. Here, a Stainless steel Fujitsubo equal length manifold has replaced the original, heat wrapped to maximise power and reduce heat in the engine bay. A Fujitsubo sports downpipe is combined with a Fujitsubo RM-01A sports exhaust. Combined, these produce a much sportier note than normal (but not excessively loud), giving a hint of the performance available.An Apexi power intake feeds air via an uprated air flow meter to the AVO front mount intercooler. This is a plate fin design, which is ideal for high power applications. Piping to and from the intercooler (to the turbo) is via aluminium hard piping and flexible silicone piping. Note the original recirculating dump valve is retained using this intercooler kit.The original ECU has been replaced with an Apexi Power FC complete with hand held commander. At a peak of 1.2 bar this car's making around 400 bhp. Clearly a standard clutch wouldn't feed this much power - so this has been uprated. Note: As with all higher power cars of this nature we supply -we'd recommend having it rolling road tested and if necessary have the map tweaked for optimal performance on UK fuels (We can recommend a good specialist where needed).In support of these power modifications, attention has been paid to the brakes too: At the front BIOT semi-floating 2 piece discs have been fitted (Bells are purple anodised aluminium). These are gripped by original STi 4 piston callipers with uprated sports pads. All brake lines have also been upgraded to braided type. These brakes instantly feel a lot firmer and more powerful than standard. Suspension is uprated using what appears to be Kei office Erfolgkei type XR coilovers complete with pillow upper mounts at the front with adjustable camber adjustment. This can be used to help maximise front end bite using negative camber. An ARC Pipe Stabiliser anti - roll bar is fitted at the rear, which is used to help promote over steer on the limit. Wheels are 17" Speedline Corse lightweight items. The headlights are from a later model Sti Version 6 as is the rear spoiler. Total cost of uprated parts fitting is in excess of £9,000 total (Excluding labour!).
There's not much we'd feel this car could use to this car, although it would benefit from some gauges and perhaps some carbon fibre funnels and ducting to the front brakes to go where the blanking covers used to be on the front bumper (These were removed to allow the intercooler piping to be fitted). Standard Specification: The engine is a red top EJ20K unit - factory blue printed endowed with stronger internals with a higher 8,000 rpm rev limit. Packing a 280+ bhp punch as standard, this example is making in the region of 400 bhp. The steering rack is quick geared for less turns from lock to lock, as engineered by Subaru Technica International. 4 Piston signature front brake calipers give excellent braking performance, as required. Further improvements from Subaru includes Sti carbon fibre front strut brace and privacy glass. The gearbox is a close ratio unit with an adjustable centre differential, geared for maximum speed of 155 mph at the red line. The electronically adjustable centre differential allows any range between a fully locked (For very slippery conditions such as snow) all the way to 70% rear and 30% front bias allowing under steer to be dialed out and for power oversteer to be supplied as required. The STi Type R is also distinguishable by it's updated vented bonnet, facelift front bumper, light green tint on windows, large rear spoiler with updated and the red and white rear lights. The interior is also of a brighter design than previous versions, with 555 embossed front seats to commemorate Subaru's win for the 1996 WRC and a Nardi steering wheel. Note that creature comforts are included such as A/C, electric colour coded mirrors with electric retract mode, central locking, electric windows, power steering, optional fitted floor mats, privacy glass in the rear, rear wiper and more!Test drive: Mechanically and cosmetically, this Type R Sti 5 is in outstanding condition. Test driving this example revealed no faults at all. It accelerates way better than a standard Type R (Which is no slouch itself!). Retaining the standard turbo, boost climbs quickly to peak and pulls like a train. No noisy hydraulic valve buckets is indicative this car`s oil has been regularly changed. Indeed, it`s still near new from it's recent major service. Brake discs are in excellent condition too and exhibit very improved power over standard. Over a bumpy road there were no rattles or squeaks. Ride is firm and progressive and has virtually no body roll at all. Clutch feels like near new too. The setup for this car is really for fast road and track days. This is a seriously fun car to drive. Sounds awesome too! Interior: This has been a non smoker's car and clearly the previous owner in Japan too fastidious care of it. There are no faults at all to report aside from no hifi fitted. Thoughtfully, the fitting plates and a DIN kit (No wire cutting required to fit your own hifi - just connect it up and use!). Uprated speakers have also been left in the car complete with monster cables. Original fitted mats are also fitted. Exterior: Note the total absence of any rust at all beneath, nor any oil leaks, etc. Also wheels are in excellent original condition with only some minor scratches to a couple of the edges. Auction grade of this example is 4 ( Auction sheet is available upon request). To check the bodywork carefully, we washed this car and noted: There are 2 small pin dents on the passenger door and also one on the driver's door. Also there's a shallow dent on the lower section of the driver's door. The front spoiler lip has some mild scratches (Which have been touched in). Each of these faults will be repaired professionally and included in the price if the full en. We also noticed a very small scratch on the bonnet. This is too small to warrant repair, but mentioned for the purposes of giing a full accurate account. Note the tail pipe of the exhaust has previously been bent. We will be cutting off approx 1 1/2 inches of the tailpipe and extending it with a titanium tip. This will give the exhaust a prettier finish - and one without the untidy repair that's currently visible. Note the pictures don't show this repair yet, but once it's been completed we'll upload some pictures of the repaired product!This example is well above the quality you'll typically find in a UK car, or one imported previously, as those will be suffering from rusty undersides, seized bolts, etc. as well as usual neglect as found in UK.
