This RX-7 Type RS took us around 3 months of daily searching to find after a previously sold example attracted much interest. With most examples available even in Japan nowadays being tired and in need of major expense to put completely right, we hadn't wanted to compromise continued to search until we found this excellent 1 owner from new example. Comparing closely with others on offer elsewhere, you can see why this car offers much better value for money than typically abused and pooly cared for RX-7's. It's essentially in concours condition and likely to be one of the very best in Europe when imported. For the customer who reserved it before completion he is now rewarded with the best we could create and unfortunately for others who were waiting to see what we had coming - they've missed the chance now!We will be looking for another to re-create as a 1999+ styled example, but it is likely to take a while.
We are not fans of FRP bumpers on these nor the pre-facelift type, so we sourced fitted a genuine 1999 front bumper assembly, corner lights and lip spoiler in addition to a genuine 1999+ adjustable rear spoiler. These OEM parts were sourced used but in good condition, then painted to match original bodywork before being fitted by ourselves. In addition we have fitted a set of used, but essentially near new condition genuine 18 inch BBS RG-R forged alloy wheels (8.5J 9.5J) and good quality sports tyres combined with new D1 spec. racing wheel nuts. These modifications retain originality as they're OEM parts, except for the wheels, which also help modernise the car to a more timeless level.
An FD3S RX-7 as standard has excellent junior supercar performance doesn't require major tuning. Better for road use is to have a non-tempermental car which will give 10's of thousands of miles and help paste a cheesy driver's smile.Original specification on an RS model included larger diameter discs at each corner (necessitating 17 inch wheels as standard where other models except the RZ had 16 inch). The RX-7 was one of the fastest stopping cars in the world when introduced and today it's brakes still remain excellent, aided by ABS of course. The RS model also included Bilstein sports suspension with slightly lower ride height at the front compared to other models. This improved front end bite due to more weight transfer to the front when braking on entry to corners. The Bilstein suspension offered improved handling with exceptional body control as standard too. This example, being a 1997 model includes a Momo leather trimmed sports steering wheel with SRS airbag. The RS model also included other nice touches such as lightweight alloy jack and alloy space saver spare wheel. Power was increased slightly over lesser models, offering 280 bhp as standard. Spec. also includes: dual oil coolers, front rear strut braces, PAS, P/W, AC, fitted mats, sports alcantara seats, etc. Interior: Being an RS model there are alcantara front seats and small rear seats which make excellent rattle free storage spaces. Note there's no ashtray or cigar lighter. Instead there's a useful padded box where the driver's elbow can rest and a delete bung in the cigar lighter socket. This has made the car remain quite "new" in smell too having never been smoked in. A Kenwood / Carrozzeria 2 Din 200W Hifi unit is also installed. Upgrades: Although standard in mechanical specification, the previous owner had an Apexi cat back stainless exhaust fitted. This is a good thing, as the original exhaust didn't sound nice at all, being quite "Wheezy" in a bid to keep noise levels down as standard. This is by no means a noisy exhaust now, just sporty without being loud enough to be anti-social. This car came to us with standard RS model 17 inch wheels, so we purchased and fitted near new genuine BBS 18 inch BBS RG-R forged alloy wheels (8.5J 9.5J) with new sports tyres of sizes 275/35R18 245/40R18 front rear respectively. These wheels when new would have cost well over £3,000 in Japan. They're of perfect size for RX-7 fitment too. In addition we fitted new D1 Spec Racing Wheel Nuts, which have a knurled end on each, to help make it easy to hand-tighten before torqueing each wheel nut to finish.

Test Drive: Oil pressure is high, regularly serviced and well maintained with a recent oil change this car runs very sweetly - just an an RX-7 is meant to. We test drove this car briefly and found it to drive very well indeed. With no squeaks or rattles at all when passing over bumps, an engine that pulls strongly when on boost, brakes that have virtually no wear and paintwork in stunning condition. We noted there's no pin dents at all on the body - incredible for a car of this age, really. This car belonged to a mature owner since new who liked to have a nice performance car but hardly used it, by the looks of it. With so few stone chips and paint in superb condition throughout the car, it's evident this car was always well cared for and not driven hard. Note there is extensive documentation with this car which proves the care it's been given and the genuine mileage.
Condition is outstanding. Although there were minor scratches on the original front bumper, these are now all gone. The front splitter has some scratches on the n/s corner but these are barely visible. The front splitter can be replaced easily enough - and is inexpensive if a new one is desired. Being made of PVC it's designed to withstand minor abrasions and bumps. On the rear bumper there are some micro cracks to the paint on the corner, where the bumper has nudged something. We'll be touching in the small scratches there, but have left the bumper as is, since it's really not noticeable without looking closely. Repainting is possible if desired for a small additional cost but we'd recommend leaving as is. There are no other marks on the exterior to report. The interior is similarly very well preserved, this having been a non-smoker's car since new. All we noticed were 2 small screw marks on the steering column where presumably there has been a boost gauge before. If desired we can supply another boost gauge to fit there, although we find it's intrusive to place one there. On the A pilar or in a bespoke steering column cover is much neater (RE-Amemiya used to make such a kit - it's very neat).
RX-7's in as beautiful low mileage modified condition as this combined at an affordable price are extremely hard to find nowadays. This example's clearly been hardly used. The engine is in fine health with high oil pressure engine. It's producing an excellent spread of power - perfectly healthy and with plenty of life to give with mileage this low. For further peace of mind, a 12 month warranty will be supplied with this car also covering rotor tips and water seals.
